How do i know if he likes me?

so theres this kid izzy and i like him like alot hes cute and stuff but hes nice to me sometimes then he can be mean he will tell me like shutup ***** or something like that but then the next he will be nice. i heard that saying before "if a boy is mean to you then he likes you". but i dont know if its true. what do you guys think? help please!
